Come visit this eclectic little shop that is home to the studio of Mita Markland Barter and also serves as a small gallery and bookshop. Books specific to the Joshua Tree National Park communities and books authored by local residents are a specialty. Area artist’s greeting cards and local music CDs round out the selection. Location G12 on the Art Tours Map, you will find our listing on the Art Tours website under Galleries.

I am concentrating on creativity for the next 30 days, it is CRUNCH time in the studio getting ready for the open studio tours.  Historically this is when I create some of my most exciting pieces…..Look out! Our studio will be open the first weekend of this years tours. October 23 and 24 from 9-5. Mita and I look forward to seeing all of you. Check out the official program, available in print at SunRunner Locations next week.

Back in the studio after a summer of comings and goings.  Have several pieces in the works incorporating paper clay and found objects.  Next step ~ firing ~ will the two mediums work together under the intensity of the heat?  The proof is in the pudding…..stay tuned.

I have returned from a sojourn to Northern California and have come back with some new ideas and directions.  Staying true to my focus of rendering the nude female form but perhaps changing out the materials.  I will be experimenting with paper clay and wherever that leads me.  Incorporating found objects will remain a constant as I search for the figure hidden in the medium.

Allen and his wife Mita welcome you to their Adventures in Wonderland.  The show runs Tuesday March 2- Saturday March 20.  Gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday 1-5 pm.  Opening reception 1-5 on Saturday March 6th!

The Glass Outhouse Art Gallery Directions to the gallery: Head east on Hwy. 62 to 29 Palms. San Miguel Shrine Close-UpThe end of the month, October 31-November 1 is the weekend we open our Studio to the public.   We are number 61 on the map this year. Mita and I both have been working on new pieces and are excited to welcome you to our space. www.hwy62arttours.com

While you are here make sure to visit the shrine that we are putting together to honor dead artists. Last year we visited San Miguel de Allende and were impressed by the Day of the Dead celebrations and wanted to share some of that with you.  One of the first art forms, the building of shrines with the placement of objects in assemblage create meaning that is beyond words.   Following in the traditions of Day of the Dead this shrine will be personal, communal, political, spiritual, and interactive; guests are encouraged to bring images of a dead artist they wish to honor to as well as offerings such as flowers, food, candles, incense.

Joining Mita at the Cowboy Gathering in Big Bear Lake today and tomorrow. Showing 4 pieces united with the bullet hole theme.  Three are shown below.  http://www.bigbearcowboygathering.net

Morning Guests

Mita and I had over 150 guests over two days.  Sales were good, and interest was high.  The poor economy did not seem to damper people’s desire to spend some time and some gasoline to see art!    We enjoyed meeting people from the Los Angeles area as well as locals.     After resting up during the week we ventured out ourselves to view studios in Morongo Valley, Yucca Valley, Landers and Joshua Tree.  Last night’s closing party at Bobby Furst’s was a great way to end a great 10 day art adventure. Open Studio Tours is over but guests are still  welcome!  Just use comment feature to set up a time to come view works in progress. Mornings are always best.
